Development and design of roll-forming machine

During the strength calculation of the hanger assembled from roll-formed sections it was found that its structural reliability was insufficient. A hangar structure is a half of cylinder assembled from tandem sets of sections. The hanger has no additional strengthening elements. Stiffness of the construction is only the combined stiffness of its sections. Therefore, it was decided to study a process for section forming and a process for folding of finished sections by corrugating its surface and to modernize a roll-forming machine with the aim to make the sections of higher stiffness. The sections are rolled from the sheet of a standard (for Russia) thickness.

A roll-by-roll system was designed, providing stage-by-stage deformation of steel sheet to achieve the desired shape.
Figures below are the diagrams of behavior of steel sheet rolled in the machine. The surface is corrugated based on the sections each of which is formed by separate rolls of the machine.
